Round ice cubes

I want them. Round ice cubes, that is. Maybe I'll splurge on this expensive and complicated Japanese contraption that melts cubes into spheres.

To quote the Japenese Trend Shop,

"Spheres of ice are preferred because the smaller surface area means the ice melts slower, keeping drinks cold without becoming too diluted. Simply heat briefly in hot water, place good-quality ice in the mold, put on the top, and it works on it’s own!

Of course, this is the Mini Version, but you can fill a glass with a single ball or creative shape using the other available molds, ranging up to 80mm!
The Ice Ball Molds can be used to create 30-40 ice balls an hour!"

Gilded dreams

I can't stop staring at these picture of framed windows on a housing project designed by Stockholm architects Wilhelmson Arkitekter. The houses lord over the sea in Helsingborg, Sweden, and Denmark can be seen on the horizon. I love how surreal and opulent it all is. 2modern1 2modern4 2modern3

So hip.

In the past couple of weeks, I've discovered two very cool places.

1) Drink. It's probably the coolest bar I have ever/will ever go to. It is located in the hip Fort Point area by the Children's Museum. Three u-shaped bars have 2 or 3 extremely accomplished bar tenders making you complicated, old fashioned, and very authentic drinks right in front of you. They muddle the cucumber, infuse the sugar cubes with bitters, chip ice off of giant blocks. Really. The coolest place ever.

Plus, we made friends with a guy named John Mayor. His brother's name is Dave Matthew Mayor. Funny.

2) If you need a haircut, go to Shag. I went with my pal Daniela, and she was under the impression that it was in the South End. After following her gps system all over the city, we ended up in an area that resembled that of Gone. Baby, Gone. And it was!! We were in South Boston. The bar across the street from the salon was the one in the movie, Murphey's Law. It was thrilling.

The salon was awesome, and pretty cheap for a hair cut. I didn't get one, I just sat in a delightful chair, sipping a free mimosa, watching Daniela get life-altering bangs. She looks great. Think Manny from Degrassi.

So, go to those places. The end.

Via 2 Modern

Here's my latest post from blog.2modern.com.

so so so smart.

A few posts back I wrote about a "polite" umbrella, that squished up on each side so you could pass fellow umbrella-toters in the rain without bumping into them. I've often fantasized about a contraption that would make it so I could use an umbrella while carrying things in both hands (or at least an umbrella with a cup holder in the handler).

You can imagine my excitement when I found this posted on Swiss Miss. A Japanese umbrella shoulder holder!

And a steal at about $26.00 from Amazon Japan.

Same Dresses

I just discovered the wonders of Google Picasa, and for the past hour have been making collages galore. This is one of my favorites. I ran into my buddy Bailey (left) one night, and we just so happened to be wearing the same exact dress from H&M. We laughed and laughed and laughed and made awful faces, but it made for some funny photos.

Decadent Hotel Night

Ben and I found a cheap deal on a Boston hotel recently, and decided to take a mini vacation 15 minutes away from the apartment. It was delightful and clean (absolutely the opposite of our apartment right now). It was big and white and very air conditioned. And I had a strange obsession with taking pictures in their well lit square mirrors.

The view out of window.

Heelarious

I found this over on Notcot. A chair that scans your bum, and then prints out the picture!

From 2 Modern:

Magazine-Scapes

I was really blown away by these magazines that artist Nate Page carved out. At first glance they creeped me out because I thought it was some gruesome painting or sculpture, but realized that what I thought were muscles and blood were the inside pages of the magazine! Trippy. 2modern 2modern2

Rooftop Pool

Scenes from the roof top pool at The Colonnade Hotel in Boston.

This Monday, Daniela and I had work off, and instead of going to the beach, (sand+sun block=unhappy rachel.) I had read about the RTP (roof top pool!) ontop of the Colonade Hotel, and it said that for $30, non-hotel guests could use the pool for a day. So up we went to the roof, bags packed with chips, sandwiches, trashy magazines, and towels. The youngster at the desk said they were full, and that we wouldn't be able to get in. He must have felt awful for us, because we just sort of stood there. I think I might have teared up a little. Finally he said, just go in.

Huzzah!

So we didn't have to pay. And we spent the whole day there, sipping Mojitos. It was marvelous. We even made friends with a pretty lady from Venezuela!

PS- check out the dude's mullet.
You may have to click to enlarge, but it's worth it.

Secret earrings!

Check it out: the chains on the earrings I'm wearing in this picture are coming from BEHIND MY EAR LOBE. I'm sure these earrings exist, but I'm totally into the idea of earrings with pieces that hang from the post behind your ear lobe, before the little stopper. So I made these hammered hoops that float on the lobe, with the gold chain and turquoise bead hanging from behind! Trippppy.

Do we feel good about these?

Folding Chair

I've always liked Regina Spektor. Great walking-around-the-city in the sun music  to be-bop around to. Except for her slow songs. Those are kind of downers.

Her newest album, however, has one song called Folding Chair that I could seriously listen to on repeat for the rest of my life. It is so up beat and fun and makes me sing out loud even though I'm wearing my head phones.

If you've never heard it, here's a video.

She played one year at Brandeis for the big concert, but I fell asleep on the floor in the back of the gym...she wasn't too riveting live. And then she yelled at everyone because people were talking.

In any event! Listen to Folding Chairs. Love it.

Pedal into my heart

I like bikes. I know, everyone does. Who doesn't like a bike? I'm different, because I don't like riding bikes. Actually, I'm sure there are lots of people who are like that too. I bought an adorable yellow old 60's one speed bike from a flea market once. I tried to ride it down my driveway and got too tired to ride back up. Needless to say, it hasn't made it to Boston yet. Sometimes I fantasize about riding it to a bakery in a red and white polka dot dress, a big straw hat on, and coming home with a baguette and some muffins in an equally adorable basket.

Obviously hasn't/will never happen.

so, instead I made the necklace pictured above. It is the sister necklace to this:

Which followed the original:

And that's the evolution of the bike.

Amy!

I just discovered my friend Amy's blog. I like it like it. so should you.

And she was in the Metro! So she is famous, too.

BTW, AMY, i opened an ice cream store one summer after freshman year of B-Deis, so if you need a giant pink and green Hood Ice Cream flag to hang from a window, or a big ice cream cone cut-out, I've got you covered!
